gprs-investigates-underground-storage-tanks-1.png

GPRS was contacted by a engineering firm to investigate for any buried structures or possible underground storage tanks (USTs). After arriving on site, the firm let GPRS know that there had been a truck stop with diesel filling stations at one point dating back all the way to the late 40’s or early 50’s.

There was no clear documentation stating whether the USTs had been removed or abandoned in place, so GPRS did what we do best; create a strategy to provide the best subsurface scanning solution.

GPRS scanned the area with Electromagnetic Induction (EMI) equipment, and we were able to provide conductivity maps that represented the data collected from the scanning process and overlaid on to Google Earth. GPRS also provided a detailed report which included maps of any utilities around the area as well as where the suspect tanks were to be. Data screenshots were saved for the reporting as well.

GPRS-Scans-Pandeck-Slab-in-Shelbyville-Kentucky.jpg

In early January, GPRS was contacted by a general contractor to perform concrete scanning. The contractor was in the process of renovating an apartment complex in Shelbyville, KY. The engineer involved with the project suggested using GPR to determine if reinforcing existed on the second floor breezeways. The breezeway which was scanned was a pan-deck slab. This required scanning in the same direction as the pan-deck. When scanning over the deepest points of the pan-deck, it was determined reinforcing existed within the breezeway. This information was then compiled into a report which included data images, pictures, and findings. The report was submitted to the contractor to present to the engineer. The work was completed using a GSSI (Geophysical Survey Systems, Inc.) Ground Penetrating Radar, 1600 MHz antenna, which was used to locate the reinforcing in the slab.

GPRS works with many environmental companies assisting with underground surveying. Our services range from locating utilities to the identification of underground storage tanks (UST’s). Most of these companies look to GPRS in helping them determine if UST’s are still in the ground and if so, where they are located. Recently, GPRS of South Bend was asked to mobilize to a property in Mishawaka, Indiana. The survey began on the north side of the property using our Electromagnetic Induction equipment, followed by traditional Ground Penetrating Radar, both yielding no evidence of any tanks. Next, the eastern and southern areas of the property were scanned in the same manner with both technologies producing evidence of existing UST’s. One of the many benefits of the GPR for these studies is the ability to not only locate the UST but also know the approximate size. As you can see in the picture below, all 4 sides of both UST’s were identified marked with paint directly on the surface of the asphalt.

Working in conjunction with an environmental firm a GPR survey was conducted at The Golf Club of Indiana Golf Course. Ground Penetrating Radar Systems (GPRS) was there to conduct the GPR scan to see if there were any possible underground utilities or underground pipes running through an area set aside for soil boring clearance. The reason GPR scanning is used on areas like this is to locate any hazards that may be in the way of drilling. It is easy for scientists to plan where they would like to their soil borings when unknowns like utilities and other obstructions are mapped out.

GPRS of Chicago was able to conduct the scan and locate possible utilities that could have posed problems later. No underground utilities, pipes or other obstructions were found; this information was then relayed to the environmental firm and drilling team so they could proceed.

More than perhaps any other facilities, hospitals have a significant need to locate electrical conduits prior to any cutting or drilling. In a manufacturing facility or residential complex, cutting an electrical line can be a major inconvenience. In a hospital, cutting an electrical line can be deadly. The pictures you see below are from a local attraction in Orlando, FL. The demolition contractor was removing a curb when they unknowingly broke a main feed line for the sprinkler system. This would normally not have been something difficult to remedy. However, they did not know where the shut-off valve was for the system. With this problem hundreds of gallons of water were wasted and the ground will have to be repaired prior to work continuing.

This is not an uncommon issue on job sites today. To cut cost contractors are performing site work, demolition and excavation without having a proper utility locate performed.
